Former Richmond Commonwealth's Attorney David Hicks today formalized his endorsement of Richmond Del. Dwight Clinton Jones for mayor.
"Delegate Jones bring the experience in elected and appointed office that's necessary to do the work," said Hicks, who appeared with Jones outside the John Marshall Courthouse.
"More importantly, Delegate Jones and I share a core, heartfelt belief that in order to lead, you have to have at heart the least fortunate and most vulnerable of your citizens first. We believe the education system of the city of Richmond has got to work for all of its citizens, especially the most needy. That's what's going to make us a great city. Delegate Jones is going to be the great mayor that leads us to that next level."
Candidates have until June 10 to file for the Nov. 4 election.
Mayor L. Douglas Wilder announced last week that he would not seek re-election. The slate of announced or expected candidates for mayor also includes former Wilder aide Paul Goldman, architect Lawrence E. Williams, Donnie Corker, attorney Robert J. Grey Jr. and City Council President William J. Pantele.
Hicks had considered running for mayor but said he needs to focus on family-health issues at this time. He also said he doesn't expect candidates to emerge who aren't already on the radar.
"Unless someone's going to tell me that Tim Kaine is going to resign as governor, there is no one I can imagine who is better suited than Dwight Jones to lead this city," Hicks said.
