'Free' education fees decried
Wednesday, May 21, 2008 - 11:21 AM
A program of the Legal Aid Justice Center that offers services to low-income families is calling on local school districts to stop charging mandatory fees.
A report released today by JustChildren, shows how quickly costs for a "free" education pile up and the lengths that some low-income families must go to pay them.
Angela Ciolfi, an attorney for JustChildren who prepared the report, presented her findings to the state Board of Education this morning.
She urged the board members to clarify prohibitions on mandatory fees for instruction and course work.
