Single-vehicle crashes kill 5 during weekend in Virginia

Five people were killed in single-vehicle crashes on Virginia roads during the weekend, state police said.

Jerome Onis Rorie, 58, of Kenbridge died yesterday when his car overturned in Lunenburg County. Virginia State Police said Rorie was traveling on state Route 604, near state Route 645, when his car veered to the left and overturned at 10 a.m. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

A man from Gates, N.C., died yesterday after he was ejected from his car late Saturday in Suffolk. Gary Riddick, 23, was driving on Caroline Road, north of Roundtree Crescent, when he struck a ditch on the left and the car rolled several times before stopping, police said. Riddick was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he died yesterday at 1:20 a.m. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

State police also reported the death of a Gordonsville woman in Louisa County on Saturday. Miriam A. Jones, 47, was driving on state Route 231, a half-mile north of Klockner Road, when her vehicle went off the road to the right, hit a mailbox, then traveled across both lanes and struck a tree, police said. Jones died at the scene about 6:30 p.m. She was wearing a seat belt, police said.

A few minutes earlier, two men were killed in Fluvanna County. The driver, 20-year-old Jonathan Antonio Key of Kents Store, and his passenger, 18-year-old Johnathan Farrar of Fredericksburg, were ejected from the car and died at 6:25 p.m., police said.

The crash occurred on state Route 601, east of state Route 604. The vehicle was traveling east on Route 601 when it ran off to the left side of the road and struck a tree, police said. Police have not determined whether the victims were wearing seat belts.

In addition, two pedestrians, two drivers and one passenger died of injuries suffered in crashes last week or earlier, state police said.

Carolyn E. Forrest, 53, died at Roanoke Memorial Hospital early Friday after a wreck late Thursday in Bedford County. The minivan in which she was a passenger went off the left side of state Route 24 about a quarter-mile west of state Route 732, traveled about 800 feet and struck a tree about 10:55 p.m., police said. Forrest died at 1:20 a.m. Police said she was wearing a seat belt.

Information on the driver was not available.

Shirley M. Harris, 55, died Thursday night in Hampton after stepping into traffic and being struck by a pickup truck on East Pembroke Avenue, police said.

Janet K. Kabernagel, 73, died Thursday afternoon in Northumberland County after the car she was driving ran off the left side of state Route 649 and hit a tree, police said. She was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

James E. Dalton, 62, died Wednesday in Mecklenburg County when he attempted to turn from westbound U.S. 58 onto northbound Business 58 and pulled into the path of a tractor-trailer, according to police. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

Christopher M. House, 42, died Feb. 23 of injuries sustained Feb. 8 when he stepped into the path of a car on Virginia Beach Boulevard just east of King Richard Road in Virginia Beach, police said. He died at Virginia Beach General Hospital.

Virginia has had 131 traffic fatalities so far this year, compared with 129 at the same time last year.
