Stray or lost pets in Henrico County will have a new home while they await adoption or a return to their owners.
The county's new animal protection shelter at 10421 Woodman Road is set to open Tuesday.
The old shelter at 420 Dabbs House Road will handle animal protection services on Monday, but the next day, all operations will move to the new location.
The county will not be able to accommodate feral cats until later in the week, Henrico Police Lt. Shawn Sears said.
"We expect the move to take several days, and all the plans are in place to make that happen," he said.
The new facility has such features as a power-washing system and an environmental HVAC system.
It also has increased space to meet the needs of the county. There are 75 dog runs and 75 cat cages for lost or stray pets. There is also an outdoor, sheltered area that can house displaced, large domestic animals such as horses, goats, fowl and pot-bellied pigs.
In 2007, Henrico animal protection officers responded to 18,975 calls and the shelter housed more than 3,400 domestic animals. Also last year, officers returned 616 pets to their owners, transferred or adopted 764 animals and captured 1,263 wild animals.
