Two men involved in a suspected road-rage incident yesterday on Interstate 95 appeared in court this morning.
Wade Ellegood, 52, and Edward C. Doyle III, 30, appeared before Judge Birdie Hairston Jamison at the John Marshall Courts Building. Both men are charged with assault with a vehicle and reckless driving.
Doyle, who is a project manager with a Richmond company, had the additional charge of driving with a suspended or revoked license.
Both men are scheduled to appear in court again on June 4.
The drivers were stopped yesterday by a state trooper after seeing them trying to cut each other off. The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. between the Boulevard and Belvidere exits on I-95 in Richmond.
Ellegood, who is the president of the Richmond Education Association, said the incident was a misunderstanding. He said he felt a bump when Doyle went to pass him on the interstate.
Thinking his car had been hit, Ellegood said he sped up "to get him to stop."
"It was nothing vicious; it was not an assault," said Ellegood, who said he is confident the charges will be dismissed.
