WILLIAMSBURG -- Mhairi McKay tied personal and course record with an 8-under par 63 today to take the clubhouse lead at the midpoint of the opening day of $2.2 million Michelob Ultra Open.

McKay, who finished her sterling day on the Kingsmill Resort's River Course with a birdie at No. 18, leads Annika Sorenstam by one shot and Diana D'Alessio and Lorena Ochoa by two.

The 6,315-yard Kingsmill River Course proved an accommodating host. Softened by rain that fell steadily this morning and intermittently around noon, it permitted the world's best female golfers to shoot at the flags without fear of retribution.

D'Alessio, an eight-year-LPGA veteran from New Jersey, fired a 6-under-par 65 this morning. Her round included an eagle from the fairway at No. 16, a 405-yard par-4. She holed a 7-iron from 134 yards. -- Vic Dorr
