A man and a woman died in separate early-morning car wrecks yesterday, Virginia State Police reported.

Rue E. McGee III of Bealeton died shortly before 1 a.m. in Fauquier County when his pickup truck struck a pole and a tree, partly ejecting him, police said.

McGee, 19, was traveling south on state Route 846 about half a mile south of state Route 610 when his truck crashed at 12:30 a.m., police said.

He was not wearing a seat belt, authorities said.

Shirley C. Overby, 67, of Stuart was on state Route 8 north of state Route 818 in Patrick County when her station wagon crossed the center lane and struck a sport utility vehicle at 6:30 a.m., police said. She died at 7:22 a.m. in a Stuart-area hospital, police said.

Overby was wearing a seat belt, police said.

State police also reported the death of a woman and a child in separate car wrecks on Friday.

Amber M. Young, 28, of Luray was traveling on state Route 615 in Page County when her car went off the road, onto a boat ramp at the Massanutten Boat Landing and into the water about 4:30 a.m., police said.

Young, who was not wearing a seat belt, drowned, police said.

Orion Bickings, 8, of Remington died in a single-car crash in Culpeper County at 8:20 p.m. The car the child was traveling in overturned and struck a fence on state Route 621, police said.

He was not properly secured, police said.

The fatalities brought the state's highway 2008 death toll to 285, compared with 328 at the same time last year.
