A five-run fifth inning helped the Richmond Braves overcome a three-run deficit. However, the bullpen couldn't hold the lead, giving up five runs in the seventh and eighth innings as Richmond fell to Louisville 10-7 last night in the International League.
Trailing 5-2 after four innings, the R-Braves rallied. They tied the game when Brandon Jones and Scott Thurman sandwiched RBI singles around an RBI groundout by Barbaro Canizares. Joe Borchard gave Richmond a 7-5 lead with a two-run triple.
In the Louisville seventh, Ryan Hanigan drove in a run with a double, then after Andy Shibilo came on in relief of Vladimir Nunez, Paul Janish hit a two-run homer for an 8-7 Louisville lead. One inning later, Andy Phillips closed out the scoring with a two-run double off Shibilo.
MOVING ON UP: Atlanta recalled Chuck James from Richmond to start last night's game against the Pirates and placed reliever Buddy Carlyle on the 15-day disabled list with a strained neck. James was 2-1 with a 7.62 ERA in three starts with Atlanta earlier this season.
NO SCORING ALLOWED: The Braves only have two shutouts this season, against Lehigh Valley on April 11 (6-0) and Friday against Louisville (2-0). By this time last season, the Braves had five.
TOP OF THE HEAP: The Braves have held sole possession of first place in the IL South every day since April 9.
STREAKERS: Phil Stockman has not allowed a run in his past 10 appearances, covering 191/3 innings. He has struck out 14.
CRUNCHY NUMBERS: Richmond has employed a left-handed starting pitcher in 24 games this season. The Braves have used 11 starting pitchers this season. Charlie Morton's 71/3-inning effort out of the bullpen Thursday was the longest stint by a Braves pitcher this season.
