The sailor who died from a gunshot wound Tuesday on the carrier Theodore Roosevelt committed suicide, the Navy says.

"The investigation . . . has determined the sailor died as the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound," according to a statement from the Navy in Norfolk yesterday.

The petty officer third class was on duty with the ship's auxiliary security force at the time, the Navy said. "Security force personnel are routinely armed while on duty," the statement said.

The sailor was treated on the carrier Tuesday but pronounced dead about 7 p.m.

The service did not release the sailor's identity or other details.
