A patrol deputy in Hanover County approached a man parked on private property and found hundreds of pieces of mail strewn about his car's floorboards and back seat.

Other people's mail, authorities say.

Police said Willie Lee Jones, 42, of the 15100 block of Taylor Road in Montpelier was spotted about 4 p.m. Friday near Taylor and Terry roads. Authorities say that in his car they found about 300 pieces of mail belonging to roughly 130 people.

"It was a home run," Sgt. Chris Whitley of the Hanover Sheriff's Office said yesterday in announcing the arrest.

Authorities say the mail was stolen from addresses in a 7-square-mile swath in the Montpelier and Beaverdam areas, including on Goshen, Teman and Beaverdam School roads.

The mail included opened envelopes containing credit cards, said federal Postal Inspector Michael J. Romano. "But there's no evidence at this time that any financial fraud has occurred."

Jones was charged with grand larceny and multiple counts of credit card theft, Whitley said.

People who believe they were victims are asked to call the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at (804) 418-6121.
