Rodney Monroe held his first press conference as the new police chief in Charlotte, N.C., this afternoon. He is leaving his post as Richmond's top cop, a job he has held since 2005.

In Charlotte, Monroe's annual salary will be $185,000 -- up from $165,424 in Richmond. He will oversee a budget of $174 million and 1,560 officers policing a population of 713,000 in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. In Richmond, his department had a $73.6 million budget and 750 officers policing a population of 192,000.

WWBT TV, the CBS affiliate for Charlotte, reported online that Charlotte City Manager Curt Walton touted Monroe's "extraordinary passion for law enforcement and prevention that makes a community a better place to live."
