A man wanted for child endangerment is now in custody in Chesterfield County.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was tracked about 7 a.m. by police search dogs to woods behind Elder's Garage, 14900 Jefferson Davis Highway.
The suspect - a middle-aged black man wearing dark clothing and a long, gold chain - was bitten on the arm by a search dog as he tried to elude police when they surrounded him about a half-mile north of Ruffin Mill Road.
Here's what happened, according to Chesterfield police Maj. Dan W. Kelly:
At 2:30 a.m., the man was supposed to drop off his child with the child's mother near Willis Road and Interstate 95. Police were called to the area because of a possible domestic situation.
When he saw police, he took off south on I-95 - likely because he has an outstanding warrant in Hopewell for failing to appear in court on a drug charge.
Police used a nail strip on I-95 to flatten his tires and stop his car around Woods Edge Road. There, he jumped out of the car and fled on foot.
Police searched for him for several hours. While he was running from police, he tried to enter a house along Jeff Davis, but the alarm sounded and he fled again until he was spotted near Elder's Garage.
The man will be taken to the hospital for treatment of the bite to his arm. He will be charged with child endangerment, attempting to elude police and attempted burglary, Kelly said.
