Petersburg A Chesterfield County man was arrested after he was allegedly seen taking a rare Civil War shell from a property in Petersburg's Old Towne district. Police said a city resident saw a man holding the shell on a ladder against her property on Saturday. The resident gave police a description of the suspect, and Timothy Clary was arrested later that day with the artillery in his possession, authorities said. Police said the shell had been lodged in the outside wall of the house, but once it was removed, it had to be destroyed.

Richmond As part of National Police Week, members of the Richmond Police Department will join others in law enforcement in bicycling to Washington to honor of officers who died in the line of duty. This year's Bike for the Blue memorial ride takes off from the State Capitol today at 6 a.m. A contingent of about 60 officers representing Richmond and jurisdictions from Virginia and North Carolina and local and Washington agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will participate.

Henrico The Henrico County Division of Police plans to hold a candlelight memorial service tomorrow at 8 p.m. at Memorial Park, on the access road between the main complex at the Henrico Government Center and the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court building at 4301 E. Parham Road, in recognition of National Police Officer Memorial Week.

Chesterfield The ramp leading from northbound Interstate 95 to northbound state Route 288 in Chesterfield County was blocked yesterday evening because of an overturned tractor-trailer carrying 40 to 50 hogs, Virginia State Police said. Neither the driver nor the animals were injured in the 3:45 p.m. wreck, but five of the hogs escaped. The tractor-trailer's driver, 49-year-old Kevin L. Huckeby of New Castle, Ind., was charged with reckless driving, police said.

Hanover Woofstock, a free event for people and dogs, will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Taylor Park, 13017 Taylor Complex Lane, off state Route 54. It will feature demonstrations, contests, food and vendors with pet-oriented products and a 1-mile Woofin' Waggin' Walk. Advance registration and a $15 fee are required for the walk, and participants will receive a T-shirt for the human and a bandanna for the dog. Dog participation is optional. Colonial Heights The Colonial Heights City Council will meet tonight at 7 in council chambers, 201 James Ave. The Planning Commission also meets at 7 p.m.

Richmond The Children's Hospital will join Richmond's fire and parks department to install river safety signs along the James River. The first signs will be unveiled tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Tredegar Street boat ramp next to Brown's Island. The signs will be placed in busy locations along the river's banks.

AROUND THE STATE

Alberta Former National Basketball Association player Bryant Stith will be the guest speaker for the 2008 Commencement at Southside Virginia Community College Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Christanna Campus in Alberta. Stith holds scoring records at both Brunswick High School and the University of Virginia.

Harrisonburg Prosecutors say Harrisonburg Treasurer Rebecca Neal has pleaded guilty to misusing public funds. Commonwealth's Attorney Marsha Garst said last week that Neal was charged with misusing public funds from February 2004 to November 2007 in the amount of $91,524. According to the plea agreement, Neal received a suspended sentence of 10 years and will be placed on two years' probation. Neal also will pay restitution to the city in the amount of $150 and $800 to the Harrisonburg Police Department. She also will forfeit her job as city treasurer.
