Although Colonial Heights' existence as an independent city is relatively new, the community got its name during the Revolutionary War when the Colonials -- French troops under the command of Gen. Marquis de Lafayette -- retreated north and deployed artillery on the heights overlooking Petersburg. The name "Colonial Heights" stuck. The Fort Clifton festival will be held at Berberich Park, behind Tussing Elementary School off Conduit Road.

David Cooper said Phyllis Pollard slumped over the wheel as she was driving about 8:15 a.m. yesterday, and the bus went off the road and struck a tree. Cooper said seven of the 31 middle school students were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. He said Pollard, who was in her 50s, was trapped in the bus for nearly an hour and then was taken to a Lynchburg hospital.

Waynesboro A bald eagle rescued after it collided with a tractor-trailer in James City County last fall has a new home. The Wildlife Center of Virginia has transferred the adult female bird to the Greenburgh Nature Center in Greenburgh, N.Y. There are more than 500 active bald eagle nests in Virginia. As few as 80 pairs of eagles nest in New York. A tractor-trailer driver reported hitting the bird on Interstate 64 in December, shattering the truck's windshield and breaking the bird's wings.
