Chesterfield Scott Williams, a member of the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia, will present a lecture Saturday at 11 a.m. about the Bermuda Hundred Campaign of the Civil War. Petersburg St. Joseph School officials and parish officials plan to meet this morning with representatives of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond to discuss the school's future. Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo had given the school until today to raise $1 million to remain open next year. As of yesterday, the school had raised about $800,000 in checks and in-kind donations.
Powhatan Four miles of state Route 13 in Powhatan County will be repaved this summer as part of a larger $2.3 million contract the Commonwealth Transportation Board has awarded Blakemore Construction Corp. of Richmond. The repaved section will run from a mile north of state Route 627 to just south of state Route 1002, the Virginia Department of Transportation said. Work will start early this summer and is scheduled to be completed in September.
Henrico Fred S. Morton IV, Henrico County's school superintendent, has been elected to serve a three-year term on the executive committee of the American Association of School Administrators, beginning July 1. AASA is the professional organization for school superintendents and other school system leaders nationwide. As a member of the executive committee, Morton will review and approve the association's strategic plan and budget. Morton is in his fourth year as superintendent.
Petersburg Police are seeking the community's assistance in solving the 2005 slaying of an 18-year-old man. A police spokesman said police have had some leads in the case of Deandre "Dee" Thomas, who was found shot to death on Oct. 22, 2005, behind a building at 116 Liberty St. Thomas had told his grandparents the day before that he would call them when he got home, but he never called. Hampden-Sydney The Hampden-Sydney Men's Chorus will be joined by the choir of Sweet Briar College for a spring concert Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Crawley Forum on the Hampden-Sydney campus. There will be a repeat performance April 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Sweet Briar's Memorial Chapel.
Farmville Three Longwood University researchers are trying to determine if Nintendo's Wii video game system can help older adults with arthritis. The three faculty members in the department of health, recreation and kinesiology are measuring the game's effects on the lower extremity endurance and the range of shoulder motion of nine people who have arthritis.
Charlottesville The state Department of Environmental Quality has opened an air-pollution monitoring site for the Charlottesville-Albemarle County area. It is located at Albemarle High School. Equipment at the site will check the air for ozone, the main pollutant in smog, and for soot and dust.
Roanoke The McGlothlin Foundation of Bristol has awarded Roanoke County teacher Tamatha Farrell $25,000 and a McGlothlin Award for Teaching Excellence. Farrell, a 1995 graduate of Radford University, teaches at Burlington Elementary School. A stipulation of the award is that $10,000 of it be spent on international travel. Farrell plans to go to England, home country of author Roald Dahl, whose book "James and the Giant Peach" is part of her curriculum. -- From Staff and Wire Reports
