Henrico Two Short Pump jewelry stores have been hit in recent weeks by a thief who made off with expensive wristwatches. A woman's diamond watch valued at $5,100 was stolen from Capri Jewelers at 11525 W. Broad St. on April 3. Police said a male suspect concealed the watch while store clerks were distracted. A similar theft occurred at Schwarzschild Jewelers at Short Pump Town Center on Feb. 22. The suspect distracted the sales clerk long enough to conceal a watch valued at $13,000, police said. Anyone with information about the thefts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.

Chesterfield Parents of school-age children in Chesterfield County are being asked to respond to the 2008 Triennial School Census, which has been mailed to all homes. The census count is used to determine the amount of state money that each school division receives. Parents are asked to respond if they have children ages 5 to 19. The deadline for responding is April 25. Those who don't respond will be contacted again.
Powhatan The county Board of Supervisors this week passed a resolution accepting a study of Huguenot Trail, also known as state Route 711, that can be used when planning for preservation, development and improvements along the road.
Henrico A two-week training school hosted by the Virginia State Police Motorcycle Unit winds up today at the Richmond Raceway Complex with the graduation of two officers from the Henrico County Division of Police, one from the Blackstone Police Department and three Virginia state troopers.
Caroline The county was notified recently that it has won a 2007 award of excellence from the Southern Economic Development Council for an industrial marketing piece, "Opportunity." Caroline's entry competed in the Literature and Promotion Awards category. The competition was held in November in Little Rock, Ark.
Richmond Save Richmond Schools, a political group organized by School Board member Keith West, will hold an orientation session for prospective School Board candidates Saturday at 10 a.m. at 2509 E. Broad St. The meeting will cover the duties of board members and the requirements for running a campaign.

Farmville A golf tourney, the first major fund drive to develop a park in Buckingham County commemorating the former Rosenwald School for African Americans, will be held May 3. The Ellis Acres Memorial Park Inc. Golf Tournament will be held at Brookleigh Country Club in Farmville. Features at the proposed park range from a tot playground to handicap-accessible trails.
Manassas Prince William County Executive Craig Gerhart says the county's illegal immigration crackdown will cost $520,000 more than anticipated in the coming budget year. Gerhart is citing overcrowding at the county jail. The increase raises the cost of the initiative to $6.9 million for the fiscal year that starts in July. The new policy requires county police to check the immigration status of anyone arrested, even for minor offenses, if they suspect the person might be in the country illegally.
Charlottesville The University of Virginia says sensitive information on more than 7,000 students, staff and faculty members could be in jeopardy. School officials say a laptop stolen from a university employee contained a confidential file filled with names and Social Security numbers. Officials mailed out letters Monday to each person affected by the data breach. School officials aren't saying when the burglary occurred or which academic departments were affected, but said it did not occur on the Charlottesville campus.
