Richmond Virginia Commonwealth University yesterday announced a five-year contract that calls for Barnes & Noble College Booksellers to manage bookstores at the Monroe Park and MCV campuses. As part of the contract, which will take effect this summer, Barnes & Noble will renovate both locations so the new stores can offer an expanded selection of books and other supplies, and Barnes & Noble will provide VCU an advanced Web site. Barnes & Noble replaces Follett Corp., which managed the VCU Bookstores for 12 years.
Caroline Two Ruther Glen residents each have been charged with 11 counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and six counts of providing alcohol to adults younger than 21 in connection with a party involving underage drinking, according to the Caroline County Sheriff's Office. James A. Stanley, 42, and Linda L. Stanley, 43, were ordered held on a $5,000 bond and are scheduled to appear in court today. Christopher A. Holman, 18, was charged with assaulting a law-enforcement officer in the same event. He is scheduled to appear in court April 23. Six other adults were released on summonses for underage possession of alcohol pending trial May 23.
Powhatan The trial date for one of two men arrested with then-Powhatan County School Board member Germando Harris in a drug bust will be set June 10. Kelly L. Jackson is charged with one count of cocaine possession with intent to distribute. He was in Powhatan General District Court yesterday and waived his preliminary hearing. Jackson, Charles Edward Turner and Harris, who left the School Board in December after 12 years, were arrested in November during a drug bust at a Maidens Road home. Harris is scheduled to stand trial on June 4. He is charged with one count of possession of cocaine.
Ashland The Ashland Police Department recently received international accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. A public reception to thank the community for its assistance during the accreditation process will be held at the police department today from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. After the reception, presentation of the certification will take place at the Ashland Town Hall, 101 Thompson St.
Chesterfield The third annual James River Regatta will be held Saturday at Robious Landing Park, 3800 James River Road. Eight high school crew teams will compete in the race. Among the schools participating is James River High School, the only area public school with a crew team. The first boats will launch at 8:30 a.m., and the first race is set to begin at 9 a.m. The regatta is co-sponsored by the Virginia Boat Club. Richmond A training session for area law-enforcement officers on preventing elder abuse is planned for today and tomorrow at the Richmond Police Training Academy, 1202 W. Graham Road. The Central Virginia Training Alliance to Stop Elder Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation includes officers from Richmond and the counties of Chesterfield, Hanover and Henrico as well as area commonwealth's attorneys and adult protective-services workers.

Farmville Larissa Smith Fergeson, a Longwood University associate professor of history, will speak on "Remembering School Days: Oral Histories of Black Education in Jim Crow Virginia" Thursday at 4 p.m. in the Greenwood Library. Fergeson has been involved in public history projects that have focused on recording the memories of black students who attended segregated schools in Southside Virginia during the 20th century. She will share oral histories of people who attended schools in Appomattox, Mecklenburg and Prince Edward counties. The free program is open to the public.
