AROUND THE STATE

Danville A legal effort to halt demolition of the historic Dan River Mills complex has failed. The Danville Historical Society was denied its request for an injunction against crews dismantling the textile complex. Circuit Judge David Malesco issued the ruling this week based on the overall deterioration of the buildings. He said their condition posed a danger to the public and would be subject to vandalism if they were allowed to remain standing. Some of the buildings are 100 years old or older.

Christiansburg A former Virginia Tech student who had been drinking before she crashed into a crowd while sending a text message on her cell phone is facing jail time. Mary Elizabeth Bowen, 21, was convicted Wednesday of driving under the influence and three felony counts of maiming while driving under the influence. Three people were hurt when Bowen's small SUV veered into a crowd of people in front of a sports bar in Blacksburg around 2 a.m. June 16. Bowen will be sentenced in August.

Abingdon Federal prosecutors have charged 51 people in three states with running a major crack cocaine distribution ring that was linked to a music production company. U.S. Attorney John Brownlee alleged in a news release this week that the drug-trafficking operation was headed by people involved with Kantstop Records Inc., based in Burlington, N.C. Investigators contend musicians associated with the company had been distributing crack cocaine since at least 2003. Authorities also said the company was used to launder proceeds from distributing cocaine.
