Dutch Gap Conservation Area in southern Chesterfield County is an environmental treasure which features a bounty of birds, fish, waterfowl and other wildlife.
Considered by the Audubon Society to be one of the top birding sites in Virginia, Dutch Gap contains a large heron rookery, bald eagles and other hard to find species of birds. On the James River, the 810-acre Dutch Gap Conservation Area offers riverside nature trails, as well as opportunities for fishing, hiking, birding. In the Spring, the heron rookery (which contains more than 60 nests) comes alive as these great birds begin the mating season.
