The Berkeley Hotel at 1200 E. Cary St. is undergoing renovations.

The hotel was acquired last year by Golden Bear LLC, which also owns the Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston, S.C., the Westin Poinsett in Greenville, S.C., and the Middlebury Inn, an upscale historic Vermont inn.

The Berkeley Hotel is a AAA Four Diamond hotel. Fewer than 5 percent of all hotels attain the rating, and The Berkeley has earned this designation every year since 1989.

Guest rooms will receive new flat-screen televisions, bedding and desks and chairs. The hotel lobby, restaurant, public restrooms and meeting space will be refurbished with a sophisticated new look.

Renovations are expected to be complete by late summer to coincide with the hotel's 20th anniversary.
