A Farmville funeral director has bought A.D. Price Funeral Home in Richmond's historic Jackson Ward. The price was not disclosed.
Carl U. Eggleston bought the Price establishment from IBI Enterprises, a Michigan company. The purchase followed months of negotiations.
Eggleston owns funeral homes in Farmville in Prince Edward County and in Crewe in Nottoway County.
Marie Moore, a spokeswoman for Eggleston, said he has no immediate plans to move from Farmville to Richmond. No changes are planned in the local funeral home's operation, she said.
A.D. Price Funeral Home, which dates back 125 years, was reopened in the summer of 2006 after being shuttered for nearly two years. The funeral home had been owned by former Del. Fenton L. Bland Jr. and his wife, but their company filed for bankruptcy in 2003.
IBI Enterprises bought the establishment at auction for $995,000, creating a controversy when it said it planned to use the building, the oldest black-owned funeral home in Richmond, to teach medical procedures on corpses. The company later decided its best use was as a funeral home.
