Unspoiled barrier islands are rare gems of East Coast wilderness. |
Hidden gem CAPE CHARLES When many people think of the Eastern Shore, Misty of Chincoteague comes to mind. Maybe NASA's Wallops Flight Facility. Perhaps the acres and acres of farmland. |
The barrier islands of the Eastern Shore are difficult to get to, and even a day trip can be costly with guides charging per-person and per-hour rates. If you can't visit the islands themselves, a trip to the Barrier Islands Center might be the next best thing. The museum, constructed on the poorhouse farm of Northampton County, details the rich history of the islands and the life and times of those who lived there. |

The Blue Ridge Parkway between Mileposts 105.8 and 112.2 east of Roanoke will be intermittently detoured and closed for bridge repairs for the next 13 months, beginning Thursday. In this high-tech, everything-all-the time age, county fairs are throwbacks, representative of unhurried times and simpler tastes. No fair is less razzle-dazzle -- or more proud of it -- than the Orange County Fair. |
It seems strange to portray a 250-year-old mansion, the centerpiece of a 2,650-acre plantation, as a hidden gem, but in some ways Montpelier perfectly fits the description. |

You can still walk the hallowed ground where thousands were killed, the Civil War turned for a time in the Confederacy's favor and Gen. Thomas J. Jackson became "Stonewall." But it's been a battle. |

PLACES IN VIRGINIA YOU NEED TO SEE BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE
The 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown reminds us that Virginia is full of intriguing places.
We have the beach and the mountains, destinations rich in fun, history and natural beauty.
With that in mind, we selected 10 spots across the commonwealth to put on your list of must-see places.
This is not necessarily a list of Top 10 Places -- just 10 Really Good Ones. Some of our destinations are obvious, some less so. A few will be pretty hard to get to. All, however, are worthy and are distinctly Virginian.
The 10-part series will be published periodically between now and the end of the year. With each installment, we also will offer a "hidden gem" from that area.
