The high school in Craig County is dropping a course about the Bible's role in history and literature after all, according to the ACLU of Virginia.

The ACLU received a letter from the superintendent of Craig County public schools stating that its school board had reversed a decision made in May to teach the course, "The Bible in History and Literature."

The ACLU, in a press release, called the course "controversial and constitutionally suspect.''

The course is promoted nationwide by actor Chuck Norris and has drawn fire from civil liberties organizations and many religious leaders who claim that it unconstitutionally promotes particular religious beliefs in public schools, according to the ACLU.

A schools spokesman said today that the course will be replaced in January by one called "The Bible and Its Influence," which is produced by the Bible Literacy Project.

Virginia ACLU Executive Director Kent Willis said the new course is more acceptable to his organization.  He said it takes "a broader view of the Bible."
