No one was injured when a gunman opened fire yesterday morning in a robbery at a popular South Richmond coffee shop.

Eddie James Edwards III, 20, was taken into custody and a weapon was recovered shortly after the robbery attempt, which was reported about 11:30 a.m. at the Crossroads Coffee and Ice Cream shop in the 3600 block of Forest Hill Avenue.

Richmond police Sgt. Ron Brown said Edwards fired at least one shot inside the coffee shop before fleeing.

A city police officer gave chase. Edwards fired at the officer but did not strike him, Brown said. The officer was not injured and did not return fire.

Edwards was apprehended in the 3500 block of Crutchfield Street, near George Wythe High School and a few blocks south of the coffee shop. He was charged with robbery and attempted capital murder of a police officer, Brown said. More charges are pending.
