Northfield Foundation plans Nov. 8, 9 events

A Northfield Foundation Designer Inspiration House preview and reception will be held on Nov. 8 from 5 to 9 p.m., and brunch from 1 to 4 p.m. on Nov. 9.

Cost is $75, with proceeds to benefit the Northfield Foundation. The historic Northfield Plantation at 189 Old Buckingham Road is in Cumberland County. During the preview event, the foundation will unveil its vision of the 19th-century Southern plantation.

Northfield Foundation is a nonprofit organization designed to provide a safe haven for young women experiencing eating disorders or unplanned pregnancies. The foundation offers comprehensive medical treatment, counseling, and education through supportive residential care or community-based services.

Seminar on advocacy for elderly and disabled

The Chesterfield Council on Aging and the Chesterfield Senior Advocate will hold a workshop about how to become an advocate for older adults and disabled adults on Oct. 20, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Central Library, 9501 Lori Road.

County, state and older-adult organization representatives will provide information on how to be an effective advocate for older adults and disabled adults.

Oktoberfest event set for Saturday at Fort Lee

Fort Lee Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation will present its annual Oktoberfest tomorrow from 5-11 p.m. at the Post Field House; doors open at 4:30 p.m. The Post Field House is at 16th Street and A Avenue, Building 6008.

Cost is $6. Children younger than 12 will be admitted free. Tokens can be purchased for $1 inside the Post Field House on the day of event and used for food, beverages, games and Oktoberfest T-shirts.

Entertainment will include The Continentals, performing authentic German music. The Hirschjaeger Dancers will perform authentic German dances. The German Bakery will sell a variety of desserts and activities for children will be available.

FMWR will sponsor a 5K Volksmarch beginning at 3 p.m. starting at the Post Field House, passing through Petersburg National Battlefield Park and returning to the Field House. Registration is required. Entries will be accepted at the Post Field House on the day of the march at the registration table from 22:45 p.m. Early registration is $8 (ends today); the day of Volksmarch, $10.

The day will also feature an Oktoberfest 10K race, starting from the Post Field House at 8 a.m. Early registration fee is $13 and will be $15 tomorrow. T-shirts will be given to the first 200 who register.

Early registration will be at the FMWR Sports Office, Building 4320, C Avenue, from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. today. Registration will also be accepted at the Post Field House tomorrow from 6:30-7:45 a.m.

Those entering Fort Lee without Department of Defense vehicle decals must show a driver's license, current vehicle registration and proof of insurance. Adult passengers will need to show a driver's license or some other form of legal identification. Parking is free. For details, call (804) 765-3076 or (804)765-3176.

Chesterfield sets debt, nutrition workshops

The Chesterfield County Cooperative Extension Office is sponsoring these free workshops in October:

  • "Getting Out of Debt and Minimizing Holiday Debt," on financial-management, from 9:30 a.m.-noon on Thursday (Oct. 16), will offer tips on setting financial goals, building and monitoring a budget, reducing debt and minimizing holiday debt.
  • "Nutrition, Family Food Safety/Stretching Your Food Dollars," from 9:30 a.m.-noon on Oct. 21, will help participants increase knowledge and skills about nutrition, the MyPyramid food guide, recommended food-safety practices, and how to use money-saving strategies to trim food bills.

    Workshops will be at the Cooperative Extension Office, 6807 Mimms Loop, in the county government complex off of Lori Road.

    Master gardener training starts Jan. 14 in Hanover

    The Hanover Master Gardeners and Virginia Cooperative Extension will hold a Master Gardener training class from Jan.14-March 30.

    Classes for the 60-hour training period will be on Mondays and Wednesdays in the Department of Social Services meeting room at the Hanover Human Services Center, 12304 Washington Highway, just south of the intersection with Ashcake Road.

    The fee is $140, which covers the cost of the Master Gardener Handbook, Pest Management Guide and other materials for trainees. The application period is Oct. 15-Nov. 30.
