Two members of the Tezcatlipoca Voladores, a Mayan Indian group, were in Richmond this morning to bless a 90-foot pole that's being installed for their act high-flying act in the Richmond Folk Festival.
This blessing included a rooster, some tequila, incense, prayers and traditional music — all designed to protect the five members of the group who will be either dancing atop or flying from ropes connected to the top of the pole.
The pole was anchored in concrete at the southwest corner of NewMarket Corp.’s property, just down the hill from the Virginia War Memorial.
The highly acclaimed group’s first performance will be tomorrow at 6:50 p.m.
