James River, Deep Run dominate opening round of Central Region golf tourney

James River of the Dominion District holds a two-stroke lead over Deep Run of the Colonial District following today's first round of the 36-hole Central Region golf tournament at the Jefferson-Lakeside Country Club .

James River posted a 15-over-par total of 299 (four scores count) on the par-71 layout. Deep Run, with all four scores in the 70s, turned in 301.

The top two in the eight-team field advance to the Group AAA state tournament Oct. 20-21 at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian. The Rapids and Wildcats virtually sewed up the two berths yesterday. Third-place Atlee of the Capital District is third, 24 strokes out of first.

The tournament concludes today at River's Bend Golf Course in Chester.
