The Judith Stewart Dresser Memorial Bridge on state Route 5 over the Chickahominy River in Charles City County will be closed from 11 p.m. Thursday until 5 a.m. Friday for construction work.

During that time, travelers will take a 63-mile detour. The Virginia Department of Transportation urged drivers to make alternate travel plans or to allow at least an extra hour and a half for their trip.

To detour from Charles City County eastbound on Route 5:

  • use state Route 155 north in Charles City
  • to U.S. 60 east in New Kent County
  • to state Route 614 south in James City County
  • and back to Route 5

To detour from James City westbound on Route 5:

  • use Route 614 north in James City
  • to U.S. 60 west in James City, through New Kent
  • to Route 155 south in New Kent through Charles City
  • and back to Route 5

Construction crews will be pouring concrete for the new Route 5 bridge's deck during the overnight closure, the last of six such closures scheduled.
