The rain that has doused the Richmond area isn't going anywhere.
More than 1.75 inches of rain fell yesterday and overnight at Richmond International Airport, as a low-pressure system moves slowly through the Carolinas and whips rain inland from the Atlantic Ocean. Accumulations were heavier in spots, including the Nationial Weather Service office in Wakefield.
"We had a massive downpour of more than three inches at our office," said meteorologist Mike Rusnak. The system isn't moving out of the area today because Tropical Storm Kyle is giving it nowhere to go, Rusnak said. Kyle isn't expected to affect coastal Virginia, but its presence is causing the current system to stall.
That means more rain today and into tomorrow, with widespread showers and some thunderstorms around the region.
"We have plenty of moisture in place and it's not going to go anywhere until at least Saturday afternoon," Rusnak said this morning.
The weather service forecast predicts rainfall of up to a half-inch today in Richmond, with up to an additonal quarter-inch tonight. Some areas could get more, from one to two inches, where localized thunderstorms form, Rusnak said. Up to a quarter-inch of rain is predicted tomorrow.
