COLONIAL HEIGHTS — All lanes of Interstate 95 near the Temple Avenue exit have reopened after a serious early morning accident, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Traffic had been snarled and lanes closed after the serious three-vehicle wreck about 5 a.m. Officials worked to reopen lanes through the morning and said all lanes were open by 1:30 p.m.
Sgt. Tom Cunningham of the Virginia State Police said a 2001 Nissan Altima, driven by Chanel Millington, 21, of Surry, swerved into the lane of a 1994 Ford Ranger towing a trailer. The Ranger, driven by Helen Momsen, 63, of Winchester, swerved into the barrier separating the southbound and northbound lanes.
A 2003 International tractor-trailer, driven by David Bowens of North Carolina, swerved to avoid the first vehicles, jackknifed, overturned and burst into flames, Cunningham said.
Bowens has been hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, Cunningham reported. He said Momsen has non-life-threatening injuries. Cunningham said Millington has been charged with reckless driving.
