Brad Lebo of Shippensburg, Pa., and Jay Klapper of Lawrenceville, Ga., share the first day lead at the Professional Putters Association National Championship being held at the Putt-Putt Golf Course on Midlothian Turnpike.
Each posted 51-under-par 93s for the four rounds -- 72 holes -- played yesterday. Par is 36 per round, 144 total. Both players are chasing the top prize of $2,000 again. They shared the national runner-up spot last year. Lebo won the 2006 crown and in 2005 Klapper won and Lebo was runner-up.
The best of the local pros was host professional Gary Hinshaw, who carded 44-under 100. Reigning state champion Vince Batten of Mechanisville is at 101.
In the amateur division, James Walker, a Richmonder and Virginia Commonwealth University sophomore, shot 94 and leads Malcolm Shumaker of Farmville by three strokes.
Play continues today with a 10 a.m. starting time. The final 72 holes of the 12-round event will be played Saturday, starting at 8 a.m.
