Stafford considers making schools English-only
Wednesday, Sep 17, 2008 - 08:00 AM
STAFFORD -- A proposal to make Stafford County schools English-only is on hold because of concerns it would hinder the teaching of foreign languages.
The resolution was one of three proposals submitted in May to county supervisors by a task force on illegal immigration.
Last night, supervisors tabled the English-only proposal because of concerns it is too broad.
Supervisors Mark Dudenhefer and Cord Sterling questioned language that they said could have made it difficult to teach foreign languages and to properly instruct legal immigrants who may need help learning English.
Supervisors said they'll take another look at the proposal at their next meeting.
