Program aims to help foster care children reach college
Saturday, Sep 13, 2008 - 02:20 PM
The Virginia Foundation for Community College Education has raised $2 million toward a goal of $10 million to endow a program to help foster care children in Virginia to further their education at the state's community colleges.
Cate Maginnis Wyatt of Waterford, a board member of the foundation, announced the total this morning at the first annual Great Expectations Education Forum designed to kick off the program.
Of Virginia's 8,000 children in foster care, less than 3 percent will earn a college degree, Wyatt said. The program, which heard from six youngsters who had been in the foster care system, is designed to provide financial support for them to go on to college.
