The John Tyler Community College Foundation Inc. awarded $147,275 in scholarships to 102 students who will attend John Tyler Community College during the 2008-09 academic year.

Students received scholarships based on academic performance, financial need and programs of study. Donors of the foundation's scholarship program were honored Aug. 20, 2008, during Scholarship Celebration Night. This annual event gives recipients and donors the opportunity to meet.

Through donations, grants and endowments, the John Tyler Community College Foundation provides scholarships for students, funds academic programs and capital projects, renovates and modernizes classrooms and labs, and encourages the professional development of John Tyler Community College's faculty and staff.

John Tyler Community College, a two-year public institution of higher education, is the fifth largest of the 23 community colleges in Virginia.

With campuses in Chester and Midlothian and off-campus classrooms throughout the Richmond area, John Tyler offers opportunities for students who want to earn a degree or certificate, transfer to a four-year college or university, train for the work force, or switch careers.

The college, which served more than 11,500 students during the 2007-08 academic year, offers 13 associate degrees, six certificates and 30 career-studies certificates.
