Pedestrian is hit, killed in Richmond
Also, crashes kill two in Augusta and Patrick counties

A Richmond man died after being struck by a van at the intersection of Chamberlayne and West Laburnum avenues in the city yesterday.

Virginia State Police identified the victim as Philip M. Bailey, 56, of the 8400 block of Spruce Pine Drive. He was hit at 12:28 a.m. while walking northbound in the crosswalk.

Bailey died at VCU Medical Center at 8:16 a.m. His is the 49th pedestrian death on Virginia roads this year, compared with 48 at the same time last year, state police said.

State police also reported two other deaths resulting from wrecks on Virginia roads.

  • A 16-year-old boy was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Patrick County yesterday. Gregory S. Martin Jr. of Stuart was a passenger in a pickup truck traveling south on state Route 680, about a mile north of U.S. 58. About 2:15 p.m., the truck ran off the road, struck a culvert and overturned. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene. Police had not determined whether he was wearing a seat belt.
  • In Augusta County, a motorcyclist was killed in a crash yesterday. Robert S. Martin Jr., 49, of Lyndhurst was riding south on state Route 258, just south of U.S. 250, about 12:15 a.m. when his motorcycle ran off the right side of the road and struck a utility pole. He died at the scene.

    Virginia's 2008 highway death toll was 563 yesterday, compared with 683 as of the same date last year.
