Two Virginia Tech students were seriously injured when they were struck by a car early this morning while walking on a sidewalk in downtown Blacksburg.
Police arrested the driver, 20-year-old Ryan William Wresch of Blacksburg, and charged him with driving under the influence and possession of marijuana. He is also a Tech student.
The wreck seriously injured Kellsye Pitsenbarger and Amanda Tyus, both 21.
According to Blacksburg police, the women were were walking west about 1:40 a.m., when a fast-moving eastbound car ran off right side of the 1000 block of Progress Street.
The front driver's side of the car hit Pitsenbarger and knocked her into the road, police said. Tyus was thrown onto the hood of the vehicle and into the windshield, and she remained on the car while it moved through a front yard, police said. The car slammed into a chain-link fence and hit a tree in another yard.
Pitsenbarger and Tyus were taken to Montgomery Regional Hospital. Pitsenbarger suffered head and leg injuries. Tyus was treated for head trauma and moved to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Wresch and a passenger in the car were uninjured, police said. Both were wearing seat belts and air bags deployed.
