The National Weather Service has issued a flash-flood watch for all of central Virginia until tonight, but what does that mean?

Flash flooding occurs within a few minutes to a few hours of excessive rainfall. Flash floods are incredibly strong and can uproot trees, move cars and destroy buildings and bridges.

The two main factors contributing to flash flooding are rainfall intensity and duration. Ground conditions also are important. Fast-rising flood waters can reach 30 feet or more.

Here's some flash-flood tips from the National Weather Service:

  • Plan ahead -- have an escape route and an evacuation plan.
  • If flooding is reported, get to higher ground as soon as possible.
  • If you're in your car, look out for flooding at dips in the road, on bridges and in low areas. About half of all flash-flood deaths are auto related.
  • Keep your car fueled. Gas stations may not be able to operate for days if power is out.
  • Keep a supply of drinking water, food and first aid supplies handy.
