Tropical Storm Hanna reminded everyone gathered for the Woodbridge-Highland Springs game of one of football's central axioms: You have to play in all types of weather.

The sloppy weather and sloppy field at Highland Springs served as a perfect backdrop for what proved to be a very sloppy game last night.

Nevertheless, the Vikings departed for a fairly happy, and it is to be hoped warmer, drive back to Prince William County with a 13-0 victory over the Springers.

The weather spoiled Loren Johnson's debut as Highland Springs' coach.

"It's not the way I want to start my career at Highland Springs, no way, no how," Johnson said. "We just didn't play well. We played sloppy."

Johnson said poor execution was the Springers' biggest problem, not the weather. Woodbridge coach Keith King said it was a factor.

"I think the weather hurt both of us," King said. "You've got to be prepared. You've got to do what you've got to do."

Great or good plays were often offset by mistakes, especially on special teams. Woodbridge's De'Antwan Williams, who rushed for more than 2,400 yards last year, and finished with 237 last week in a victory against Riverbend, was held to 82 yards on 31 carries. He scored all the points the Vikings (2-0) needed, however, on runs of 12 and 1 yards.

King credited the Highland Springs defense for Williams' relatively low yardage.

"No. 1, that's got to be one of the best defenses in the state. Their front four kids can really, really fly. They come off the ball hard. They were up there with some [linebackers] and put some guys in the backfield. We had to change some things around."

Williams proved to be the most productive member of the Vikings' offense. The rest of the team managed only 45 yards.

Highland Springs fared worse, managing 37 yards total offense. Woodbridge had eight first downs to two for the Springers (0-1).

The poor conditions hit the special teams hard. Highland Springs had two punts blocked and a fumbled snap on a third gave the Vikings a first and goal at the one. The Springers fumbled one punt return and fumbled two more times -- but without turning the ball over.

Woodbridge had one field-goal attempt blocked. The Vikings fumbled twice, but their only turnover was an interception in the fourth quarter and the Springers failed to take advantage.

Woodbridge's first touchdown followed a blocked punt by Williams -- who played both sides of the ball -- at the Springers' 16-yard line. The Vikings recovered the ball at the 9, and took three plays to score on Williams' 12-yard run.

The Vikings' second touchdown came after a bad snap on another Highland Springs' punt attempt from the Springers' 26-yard line.

Punter Clarence Hill recovered the ball near the goal line, but rather than fall in the end zone for a safety, he tried to run and got nabbed at the 1. That set up Williams' second touchdown.
