Two of Interstate 95’s three southbound lanes reopened this morning in a portion of Hanover County as crews continued to clean up the wreckage of a two-truck accident that occurred last night.
The right and center southbound lanes between exits 89 and 86 were reopened shortly before 6:30 a.m., authorities said.
The accident occurred last night at 9:49 p.m. near mile marker 88, just north of Sliding Hill Road, and involved two trucks — a road-maintenance truck with a protective rear cushion and a tractor-trailer hauling a full load of garbage.
Virginia State Police Sgt. Tom Cunningham said both vehicles were southbound when the tractor-trailer approached the road-maintenance truck at a higher rate of speed and rear-ended it.
Cunningham said the road-maintenance truck went off the right side of the road, hit a highway sign, spun around and struck several trees. The tractor-trailer jack-knifed, overturned on its side and struck a guard rail, spilling garbage over a significant stretch of the interstate.
The driver of the road-maintenance truck, who was working for a Virginia Department of Transportation contractor, was taken to VCU Medical Center with injuries that Cunningham said were not life-threatening.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, Amilcar Carmona, 49, of Frederick, Md., was not injured but was charged with reckless driving, Cunningham said.
State police rerouted southbound traffic onto U.S. 1 throughout the night, and authorities this morning said that even with two lanes reopened, motorists should expect delays throughout the rush hour.
