A Virginia Beach man was killed today when the motorcycle he was driving crashed into a car, Virginia State Police said.

Joshua Alan Barrett, 27, died at the scene of the 3:15 p.m. crash on General Booth Boulevard at Berknor Drive.

Barrett was driving north on General Booth and had passed two vehicles at a high speed before crashing into a car at the intersection. He was wearing a helmet, according to police.

A Bland County woman died Sunday after the motorcycle she was driving crashed into a guardrail.

Kathy Emma Looney, 53, was driving on U.S. 52, just north of state Route 612, when she ran off the right side of the road and struck a guardrail just after 5 p.m.

She was wearing a helmet and died about 2½ hours later at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Virginia has had 553 road deaths so far this year, compared with 659 at this time last year.
