A Rural Retreat woman and a Chesapeake man died in separate crashes this week, according to Virginia State Police.
Jean Rose Carolyn, 64, was traveling on Interstate 81 in Wythe County on Wednesday, about 2 miles north of state Route 663, when her sport utility vehicle struck a guard rail, overturned and rolled down an embankment about 7:30 a.m., police said. She died at Wythe County Community Hospital at 50 minutes later. She was wearing a seat belt, police said.
James W. Warren, 72, ran a red light at the intersection of George Washington Highway and Victory Boulevard and his mo-ped was struck by a pickup truck at 4:54 a.m., police said. He died at the scene at 5:04 a.m.
He was wearing a helmet, police said.
Calvin Murray Glass, 62, of the 10000 block of Tingewood Terrace was traveling east on Rockfish Gap Turnpike when his motorcycle struck a sport utility vehicle that had stopped to turn at 5:48 p.m. on Aug. 2, police said. He died at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
He was wearing a helmet, authorities said.
The death toll on the state's highways this year is 543, compared with 645 at this time last year, police said.
