Va. Democrats scoff at choice of Palin

Virginia delegates attending the Democratic National Convention in Denver were gleeful at reports that Sen. John McCain had picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, 44, as his running mate.
"This is a transparent attempt to pick up the voters upset by the perceived snub of Hillary Clinton," by Sen. Barack Obama, said Del. Kenneth Melvin, D-Portsmouth.
"Clinton is an accomplished woman, and this woman is not."
Melvin asked what happened to the notion that McCain, who turns 72 today, needed to put an experienced person in the ticket.
"This will not work," he said.
Other reaction to the news:
"I don't know who she is," said Doris Crouse-Mays of Richmond, secretary treasurer of the Virginia AFL-CIO. "It shows the Republicans know they are in trouble."
John Flannery of Loudoun County described the selection as "manipulative and patronizing."
Del. Rosalyn Dance of Petersburg said the selection "is going to rally the Democratic base."
Del. Lionel Spruill Sr. of Chesapeake said, "She could help McCain, because he's boring."
