Preliminary results from the Virginia Department of Education showed that 74 percent -- 1,355 of the state's 1,837 schools -- and the state as a whole met annual yearly progress standards for the 2007-08 school year.

AYP is the federal measure of progress under No Child Left Behind. In Virginia, it's based on students' scores on the state's Standards of Learning tests. State accreditation based on the SOLs will be released next month.

In three divisions -- Goochland and Hanover counties and West Point -- all of the schools achieved AYP.

Here's some other numbers:

  • Of the state's 132 school divisions, 54 made AYP, down from 59 last year.
  • In the Richmond region, eight of 21 school divisions made AYP, down from 13 last year.
  • Some school divisions, such as Chesterfield and Henrico counties, had fewer schools make AYP than last year.

For a full report on how Richmond-area school divisions fared, see today's Richmond Times-Dispatch.
