A 52-year-old woman was taken to VCU Medical Center to be treated for smoke inhalation as a result of a fire yesterday in her apartment in eastern Henrico County.
Firefighters responded to a call about 6:40 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 800 block of Grayfox Drive, off Nine Mile Road near Jacob L. Adams Elementary School, and found the porch and attic on fire, said Capt. Chris Buehren of the Henrico Fire Division.
The fire apparently started from a grill being used on the patio, he said.
A firewall prevented the blaze from spreading to other apartments, Buehren said. The high humidity required extra manpower to control the fire, he said.
The woman's injuries were not life-threatening, Buehren said. Her identity was not released. No other injuries were reported.
Yesterday morning, a fire damaged a house in the 8900 block of Germont Avenue in Chesterfield County, off Willis Road east of Interstate 95, fire officials said. That fire also started from a charcoal grill, said Battalion Chief Paul Newton with Chesterfield Fire and EMS.
The house sustained heavy damage to the roof and the inside, but no one was injured, Newton said. Two dogs in the house at the time of the fire were rescued, he said. -- Juan Antonio Lizama
