Charles City bridge to be closed overnight

The Judith Stewart Dresser Memorial Bridge on state Route 5 over the Chickahominy River in Charles City County will be closed from 11 p.m. Wednesday until 5 a.m. Thursday.

Travelers will take a 63-mile detour. The Virginia Department of Transportation urged drivers to make alternate travel plans or allow at least an hour and a half additional time for their trip.

To detour from Charles City County eastbound on Route 5:

Use state Route 155 north in Charles City

To U.S. 60 east in New Kent County

To state Route 614 south in James City County

And back to Route 5

To detour from James City westbound on Route 5:

Use Route 614 north in James City

To U.S. 60 west in James City, through New Kent

To Route 155 south in New Kent through Charles City

And back to Route 5

During the bridge closure, construction crews will continue pouring the concrete deck for the new Route 5 bridge.

VDOT plans to close the bridge three more nights -- though not consecutively -- over the next two months to speed the work on the replacement bridge.
