One person is dead, another is hurt and a third is in custody following a shooting today in Highland Springs.

Henrico County police Lt. Steve Sparagna said the shooting was reported shortly before 2 a.m. at an apartment in the 900 block of Hurtsborne Court, just west of Highland Springs Elementary School.

"One of the individuals who was wounded actually knocked on a neighbor's door and asked for help and we were called," Sparagna said.

Officers found one person already dead in an apartment, and a second person was transported to VCU Medical Center with injuries that Sparagna said were not life-threatening.

A suspect in the shooting was taken into custody a short time later about a block from the apartment, Sparagna said.

Police are not looking for anyone else, he said.

No charges were immediately filed against the person taken into custody, Sparagna said.

The identities of the shooting victims were being withheld pending notification of relatives.
