Circuit City Stores Inc. today said it is still looking at options that include a possible sale of the struggling consumer electronics retailer.
"The board continues to pursue strategic alternatives for the company that offer the best possible results for our shareholders in the long term," Philip J. Schoonover, the Henrico County-based company's chief executive officer, said in a statement this morning.
The company in May hired New York based Goldman Sachs & Co. to help it assess options after Blockbuster Inc. made a nearly $1.3 billion offer. Blockbuster backed out in July.
Blockbuster was thought to be one of several suitors for Circuit City, which reported a net loss of $164.8 million for the quarter that ended May 31.
Circuit City today also said James A. Marcum, a director, has been appointed vice chairman. Schoonover said Marcum will play a key role in leading the company's turnaround efforts.
