NEWPORT NEWS -- Newport News Assistant Police Chief Dawn Barber has been placed on administrative leave after being charged with driving under the influence.

The Newport News Police Department announced the move in a prepared statement and said it plans to conduct an internal investigation.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Michelle Cotten said state police arrested Barber late Saturday night after stopping her on Interstate 664 in Hampton.

Newport News police spokesman Lou Thurston says the 44-year-old Barber oversees administration and support functions for the department.
