The spot once occupied by the Wigwam restaurant and dance hall soon will be Hanover County's latest shopping center.
The property on U.S. 1 about 2 miles north of Virginia Center Commons will house a 33,000-square-foot shopping center that will include retail shops and restaurants.
Called Wigwam Crossing, the development will be divided into three buildings. It opens next year.
Brett Womack and Sara Goodall, agents for Divaris Real Estate Inc., the company leasing the space, said while construction will not begin until next year, they are already seeing interest.
They would not discuss what companies they had talked to, but they said they expect to announce tenants in 60 days.
Built in the early 1930s, the Wigwam was a popular spot identifiable by a 10-foot wigwam decorated with neon stars, thunderbirds, half moons and men on horseback. It reigned as a popular destination until the late 1960s.
Motley's Auction & Realty Group, now on West Broad Street, bought it in the 1970s.
The original Wigwam cabin still sits on the property. Goodall said it will be moved, but she is not sure where.
Womack said the new center will cater to Ashland commuters.
"We've got a wonderful spot on the highway with good visibility and we'll get some action from Virginia Center," she said.
Towne Center changes
Upscale men's clothing chain Bachrach will open a store at Chesterfield Towne Center in November. The 4,100-square-foot store will be near the north entrance, by Coldwater Creek. It will have access from inside and outside the mall.
The chain, with 47 stores nationwide, has one other Virginia location in Tysons Corner Center in McLean.
To make room for Bachrach, the mall will relocate the Armed Forces Recruiting Center to the east side of the mall.
Also at the mall on Midlothian Turnpike, Red Robin Gourmet Burgers will open Sept. 23.
The 5,000-square-foot restaurant will have a patio with seating inside the food court and two assigned parking spots for take-out orders. There will be entrances from outside and inside.
Red Robin, which serves more than 20 different types of burgers, has 400 locations in the U.S. and Canada. It has 16 restaurants in Virginia. The chain already has restaurants on Brook Road and West Broad Street.
Boutique moving
Tickle Your Fancy is moving from Stony Point Fashion Park to Midlothian.
The boutique will close Sept. 1 and open Sept. 27 on Hull Street Road near Woodlake Village Parkway.
The new store will be bigger and carry more housewares and accent goods.
Tickle Your Fancy opened at Stony Point in April 2007.
Auction house moving
Dixon's Auctions will move into a new 8,200-square-foot building in Powhatan County early next year.
Dixon's sells estate furniture and jewelry as well as antiques and collectibles at its current location near Coalfield Road in Midlothian, where it's been for 28 years.
The new larger building will be on New Dorset Road in the Powhatan Commercial Center and give owners more space to operate.
Hyatt account
Advertising industry magazine Adweek reported last week that Richmond's The Martin Agency was out of the running for the $40 million Global Hyatt Corp. account.
The agency was one of five semifinalists but did not make the cut.
New York agency BBDO Worldwide and San Francisco's Cutwater remain.
