A judge this morning ordered Judy Wright, 41, held without bond.
Wright is the grandmother of Dominique Carter, the 5-year-old girl who died yesterday after being shot in the head Tuesday night in Wright's East Richmond home. Police say Wright was not home when the girl was shot by Wright's 10-year-old son, who was using a gun of Wright's that he found in the house.
Wright appeared in Richmond Juvenile and Domestic Relations court this morning on a charge of felony child neglect.
Further charges are possible, police said.
The shooting was reported at 11:20 p.m. Tuesday at a home in the 2400 block of M Street.
Alician Rasin, founder of Citizens Against Crime and spokeswoman for Dominique's mother, Sharifia Warren, said Wright had just moved into the home and still had many of her belongings, including a gun, in unpacked boxes.
Wright was working as a certified nursing assistant at a Richmond-area nursing home when the shooting occurred.
A relative was supposed to come by and stay with the children after Wright left for work, but the relative did not show up, Rasin said.
The 10-year-old been placed in the custody of social services officials.
